The generic or alternate name for Orajel is Benzocaine topical. Benzocaine is a popular local anesthetic that works like a numbing medication. What it does is that it blocks your nerve signals in the body. Some of the most common uses of Benzocaine are;

  • It helps reduce pain and discomfort due to minor skin irritations
  • It helps with sore throat
  • It helps with vaginal or rectal infections
  • Helps with ingrown toenails

This medicine is also used to numb your skin or the skin inside your mouth, vagina, throat or rectum to lessen the pain caused by inserting different medical instruments like tubes inside.

Using Orajel-What To Be Careful Of?

If you ever had any case of methemoglobinemia in the past, you shouldn’t use Orajel at all. Moreover, this medicine is not recommended for children under two.Using too much of Orajel can lead to fatal side effects as your nerve signals will be blocked for too long and that’s never good.

In general no numbing medications should be used without the advice of a medical doctor. For example, if you are about to get a cosmetic procedure done, you shouldn’t just use orajel without talking about it with your doctor. This is important because in most cosmetic procedures, no proper medical doctors are involved.

You should always ask your doctor or the pharmacist if this medicine is safe for you to use. Especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, just apply Orajel on those areas that won’t come in contact with your baby’s mouth. Using baby orajel here will be the wiser thing to do.

Final Word

Whether it’s orajel for babies, orajel for kids or adults, you should avoid using it in the first place until you really need it.
